India Lead four test Series against Australia-1-0

CHENNAI: The formality of last rites was performed as a matter of course on Tuesday morning as India took 1-nil lead in the 4-Test series against Australia. The visitors, gasping for life overnight, breathed their last 9 overs into the morning and set India a victory target of 50, which was achieve by the home team for the loss of a their openers. No surprises there.

What was surprising was Sachin Tendulkar – walking out at the fall of Virender Sehwag with 14 needed – clubbing sixes against the unfortunate Nathan Lyon off the 1st 2 balls he faced. If the dutiful crowd that had turned up needed anything to sweeten an already sugary victory, it was the 2 mega hits six from the blade of the master.

It was a grand beginning to the series, the opening match having been enliven by MS Dhoni dizzying double-hundred(224) on the 3rd day and off-spinner R. Ashwin’s 12 wickets at his home ground - all on a crumbling, disintegrating pitch; but India will decently accept the result after a tumultuous home season the previous year.

The memory of England returning from a 1-Test deficit to win a needle series last year, however, is still fresh in memory. Although the current Australian side is not in the same class as England – the lack of a excellence spinner their most glaring shortcoming – the hosts will be wise to watch out for an antipodean comeback in the 3 matches remaining.
There were no twists in the morning. Australia resumed on 232 for 9 and added nine more in as many overs before Lyon inside-edged Ravindra Jadeja, off the pad, to Murali Vijay at short leg. This led to an interesting statistic all 20 Aussie wickets in the match fell to spin. Moises Henriques remained unconquered on 81, his 2nd fifty on debuts, and was along with Michael Clarke first innings (130)century and James Pattinson’s pace, one of the few positives for the losing team.

India lost Vijay and Sehwag before reeling in the trifling target. The local boy, who had been murdered by a Pattinson scud missile in the first innings, did himself no favors by getting our cheaply for the 2nd time in the match. If it was Pattinson's pace that did him earlier, this time it was a desire to tear down the condition in a hurry.

Having carted Lyon for six, Vijay tried a full-blooded drive against Pattinson, only to be held at mid-off. Sehwag had walked out without his glasses. He retraced his steps to retrieve the invaluable visual aid and 3 fours materialize from the bat of the Najafgarh Nawab two thick-ish edges off Pattinson and a dead straight drive to Peter Siddle.

Sehwag was out defending to Nathan Lyon, an edge that was taken by an alert Michael Clarke at slip. A minor psychological battle thus was won by the Aussies against India's openers, who continue to struggle as an entity despite various permutations and combination. A small victory, far less stirring to the Australians as it is grievous for India.

N Z Guptill to Miss Against England Tests Series

New Zealand opening batsman Martin Guptill will miss the Black Caps home Test series against England to feel surgery on an injured thumb, said on Thursday.

Guptill was by now in doubt for the 3rd and final ODI against England in Auckland on Saturday with a hamstring strain, but had been expected to return for the 3-Test series against the tourists next month.

Physiotherapist Paul Close said Guptill was also suffering from a formerly undisclosed injury to a thumb ligament and needed to undergo surgery.

We felt it was well to get Martin right for the tour to England in May and June, so the next couple of months were seen as the best window to have the surgery, he said.

Guptill went off injured during the first ODI in Hamilton but came back to score the winning runs for New Zealand in dramatic fashion, belting 4 fours and a six while playing on one leg to see his team home.
The ODI series is tied at 1-1 after England won in Napier on Wednesday.

Spot-fixing Asif and Butt fight Pakistan Bans

Pakistan cricket players Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif missing for Switzerland Tuesday to fight to overturn bans imposed 2 years ago for spot-fixing.

Pakistan Captain Butt and fast bowlers Asif and Mohammad Aamer were banned by the International Cricket Council for contrive to bowl conscious no-balls during the Lord Test between Pakistan and England in August 2010.

Butt was banned for 10 years, with 5 suspended, Asif for 7 years with 2 suspended and the then teenager Aamer for 5 years. The trios were also jailed by a British court over the scandal in November 2011. All 3 were released last year after completing half of their sentences.

Aamer, now age 20, decided not to pursue his appeal to the Swiss-based Court of mediation for Sport after pleading guilty to the charges in Britain. But Asif's appeal will be heard in the Lausanne court on Thursday, exactly 2 years and a day after they were banned, and Butt's on Friday.

It's a high-profile case of 2 first-class players with the whole cricket world focused on it and we will fight to get the ban overturned, Asif's lawyer Ravi Sukul told AFP from London. Asif was a very good bowler and it was offensively unfortunate that a bowler of his class suffered this, but we will try our best to get this ban overturned and Asif is in high spirits.

Butt will be represented by another London-based lawyer, Yasin Patel. Asif, 30, played 23 Tests and 38 ODI and was regarded as one of the best new-ball bowlers in the world. Butt, 28, was made Test captain on that fateful tour of England, and Aamer was regarded as the greatest emerging bowler in the world.
